As a designer, my clients often ask me about my design process, particularly for logo design. In this article, I’ll take you through my logo design process step-by-step so that you can gain insight into my design procedures. Before we begin, it’s worth briefly discussing what makes a good logo design. As renowned designer Sagi Haviv said, a good logo needs to be appropriate, distinctive, and simple. This means that the logo should be relevant to the business, unique and memorable, and easily transferrable to any medium. Now, let’s delve into my design process.
Discovery Session: The discovery session is essential to my design process. During this session, I get to know my clients and their business goals and objectives. I ask several questions, including questions about the company’s history, industry, competition, and target clients. By doing this, I can ensure that my logo design is strategically thought out, well-researched, and of excellent quality.
Research: After the discovery session, I conduct research focused on the industry, its history, clients, and competitors. This information helps me create an effective logo design that will work for my clients. I also look at my client’s competitors from a customer’s perspective, taking note of what’s working and what’s not.
Brainstorming: Using the information gathered from the discovery session and research, I start conceptualizing ideas and making decisions on possible design directions. I create mood boards, which are collections of visuals that reflect my client’s business. These help me narrow down the focus and keep everything in line.
Sketching: I believe sketching is the best way to get ideas out. I sketch more than twenty ideas and take a couple of days to complete them. Once I’ve created a large number of sketches, I choose the top three concepts to develop digitally.
Design Execution: This is where I take my top three promising logo concepts and start developing them digitally using Adobe Illustrator. I test different variations, colors, and fonts that would fit best with the direction I am going.
Presentation: Presenting your design is an art form. During the presentation, I demonstrate the logo design concepts in the context of applications relevant to the client’s brand. My objective is to display my three best logo design concepts and show how they can work in real life.
Revision / Approval: After presenting the logo design concepts to the client, it is time to gather feedback and make revisions. The client may ask for changes, and as a designer, it is important to listen to their feedback and incorporate it into the final design. This phase can involve several rounds of revisions until the client is satisfied with the final product.
Delivery: Once the final design is approved, the logo files are delivered to the client. These files typically include various file formats such as EPS, AI, PNG, and JPEG, and can be used for a variety of purposes, such as printing on stationery, web design, and marketing materials.
It is important to ensure that the client has all the necessary files and can use them without any issues. Additionally, it is good practice to provide a style guide or brand guidelines that outline the proper use of the logo and any associated branding elements to ensure consistency across all mediums.
